Start Your Indy-gines: What to Do Between #AETACETA2027 Sessions
Which way will you turn at the Crossroads of America? Indianapolis brings together world-class sports, rich history, vibrant arts, and a food scene that keeps surprising visitors. With an hour between sessions, a free afternoon, or an evening to spend with colleagues, there’s a detour worth taking. Pick one and see where the road leads!
Go with the Flow at White River State Park
Spanning more than 250 acres in the heart of downtown, White River State Park is America’s only urban cultural state park, where green space meets cultural attractions, public art, and entertainment. Stroll part of Indiana’s Central Canal along the three-mile Canal Walk, where you’ll find pedal boats, gondolas, bikes, and restaurants, all within a few steps of the water.
Beyond the canal, White River State Park is home to some of Indianapolis’s most popular cultural attractions. Meet the animals at the Indianapolis Zoo, explore indigenous heritage and the art of the American West at the Eiteljorg Museum, or put your sports knowledge to the test at the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Hall of Champions.
The Winner’s Circle of Attractions
Dive into Hoosier history at the Indiana State Museum, discover boundary-pushing art at the Contemporary Art Museum of Indianapolis, or visit the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and Museum—home of the Indy 500—to see where racing legends are made.
Indy has more war memorials than any US city (except Washington, DC), and you can take in the best view in town from the observation deck of the Soldiers and Sailors Monument by climbing 300 steps (or riding the elevator to the top). While you’re at Monument Circle, be the “I” in the NDY sculpture and share your photo with #LOVEINDY.
To make the most of your trip, buy the Indy Attraction Pass to save up to 50% compared with buying individual admissions at eight different attractions.
Take the Scenic Route
Indy is easy to explore on two wheels or two feet! Sign up for a guided bike tour for a fresh look at the city’s neighborhoods and landmarks, or set your own pace on the Monon Trail, a popular route for riders, runners, and walkers. The Cultural Trail connects all six of Indy’s cultural districts along one scenic path, and with 212 public parks across the city, a patch of green is never far away. For a quieter outing, walk or ride through the 555 acres of historic grounds at Crown Hill Cemetery.
Family Fun at Full Throttle
If you’re bringing the whole crew to #AETACETA2027, Indy has plenty to keep every age entertained. Spend the day at the Children’s Museum of Indianapolis, then let little ones burn off energy at the Colts Canal Playspace or explore the trails and gardens of Holliday Park.
Young racing fans can get a behind-the-scenes look at the Dallara Experience Hub, and sports-loving families can catch an Indianapolis Colts or Indiana Pacers game. October in Indy comes with a little extra thrill: The Headless Horseman Festival, a spooky-but-fun outing for the whole family.
Plan Your Pit Stops
Ready to feed your inner explorer? Start on Massachusetts Avenue (known locally as Mass Ave), where restaurants, art galleries, and boutiques line one of the city’s most walkable streets. At the northern end, you’ll find the Bottleworks District, Indy’s newest retail center.
No Indy food tour is complete without the legendary shrimp cocktail at St. Elmo Steak House, a bucket-list bite that clears the sinuses and delights the taste buds. Don’t miss out on taking your best shot at Plump’s Last Shot, where Hoosiers fans and basketball lovers can soak up a little Indiana hoops history. Anyone who likes a good pour can earn points and cash rewards for visiting local breweries, distilleries, and wineries with the Indy Craft Pass.
