Dr. Jennifer Barfield will approach this topic in three parts: where we’ve been, where we are, and where we may go. We will begin with a quick refresher on cryobiology basics followed by a brief historical perspective on freezing IVF embryos, considering the successes and the challenges of past approaches. This will be followed by a summary of the current state-of-the-art for both slow freeze and vitrification of IVF embryos with an overview of the most commonly used protocols and the advantages and disadvantages of each. This discussion will be framed around the needs of the industry. This talk will conclude with a glimpse into the future where we will explore new cryobiological technologies that may be incorporated into future protocols for improving post-thaw/post-warming embryo viability.
